SAN DIEGO- Water is expected to be restored late Friday morning in University City where there's a 50-foot-long, 25-foot-wide sinkhole. Officials say a storm-water pipe ruptured below the middle of Campus Point Drive. Runoff from the pipe then eroded the ground beneath the pavement. About 30 commercial properties have been without water service since early Thursday. 10/6/11 SAN DIEGO- A sinkhole opened on a University City street Thursday, forcing the closure of the roadway while authorities worked to determine what caused the problem and make repairs. The pit in the middle of Campus Point Drive, near Campus Point Court, was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to San Diego police. A stretch of the street was blocked off in the area, which is just north of UC San Diego campus, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said. It was unclear what caused the roadway to cave in. Crews with the San Diego Water Department shut off the main that serves the neighborhood as a precaution, though officials believed a ruptured storm drain might have been to blame, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins said. |
