What is the diameter of Comet Elenin?

Here is an early size estimate calculated by a respondent to a discussion board. The size will be recalculated as more information becomes available. Morpheus...

Let's see...It was spotted with an 18" telescope at over a billion miles away, and I am to
believe this is only 3-4 kms in diameter?

I don't think so...not with an 18" telescope.

3 JANUARY 2011 03:40 AM THE OBJECT WAS AT 545 000 000 KM FROM EARTH AND ITS SIZE WAS ABOUT 1-2 SECONDS OF ANGULAR DIAMETER

d=diameter of object
L=distance earth-object
ç= angular diameter in degrees

d=2L(tan (ç/2))

http://www.convertun...econd/to/degree

ç=2 arcsec = 0,00055555 degree
L (on 3 january 03.40 am 2011 ) 545 000 000 km
d=(545 000 000) (tan 0,00055555)
d=5284 km

ELENIN = 5284 km or 3283 mi in Diameter

The diameter of the earth at the equator is 7,926.41 miles (12,756.32 kilometers).

But, if you measure the earth through the poles the diameter is a bit shorter - 7,901 miles (12,715.43 km). Thus the earth is a tad wider (25 miles / 41 km) than it is tall, giving it a slight bulge at the equator. This shape is known as an ellipsoid or more properly, geoid (earth-like).

About The Real Signs of Time

Think for yourself” is probably the most important advice an educated person can hear. Unfortunately, its meaning has become ambiguous.
