VIDEOS - Hundreds killed in Pakistan 7.8 MAG earthquake

The death toll from a powerful earthquake that hit the remote Awaran district of southwestern Balochistan Province in Pakistan has passed 200.

Pakistani officials said on Wednesday that the 7.8 magnitude quake had killed 208 people and injured another 373.

The Tuesday tremor also caused serious damage to houses and communication systems.

"We have started to bury the dead," Abdul Rasheed Gogazai, the deputy commissioner of Awaran said.

The earthquake was felt in areas including Karachi, Hyderabad, Quetta, and Kalat.

Reports say that tremors have even been felt in areas as far away as the Indian capital New Delhi.

The Pakistani army deployed helicopters and hundreds of soldiers to help carry out rescue operations to the region.

Following the earthquake, a new island emerged from the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Gwadar. Pakistani officials say the new island is 100 feet in diameter and about one mile away from the coast.

Pakistan's Balochistan Province is prone to earthquakes. At least 41 people were killed in a similar earthquake back in April.
