Perhaps it is best to introduce quantum healing from the viewpoint of Deepak Chopra, who has literally written the book on the subject. Chopra was a Western-trained physician who was unsatisfied with what western doctors and nurses had to offer the patient. Chopra became a master of Ayurvedic medicine, the Indian tradition of healing, and has since pioneered his own holistic healing methods. Quantum healing is one of those methods.

What is Quantum Healing?

Chopra describes quantum healing as a form of healing that sees the body as a field of energy; a change in this field of information can hence change our physical state of well-being. According to an interviewwith Dr. Chopra:”Quantum healing involves a shift in the fields of energy information, so as to bring about a correction in an idea that has gone wrong. So quantum healing involves healing one mode of consciousness, mind, to bring about changes in another mode of consciousness, body.”

Chopra claims that current quantum physics is a validation of the ancient metaphysics involved in Ayurveda. By focusing our minds on the ailing areas of our physical body (i.e. meditating), Chopra asserts that we can physically change ourselves on a quantum level. This change at the very basis of our being can thus manifest itself on a greater, sensory level. Although undetectable to the naked eye, these changes can be seen on a physical and biological level over time.

For example, one study that quantum healing proponents point to shows that large groups of meditating people can actually reduce crime rates in an area, by focusing their thoughts and energy on that particular problem.

What Skeptics Say

Chopra’s assertion of quantum affects on our body is certainly interesting, but some physicists say that science does not underpin Chopra’s assertions. For example, one physicist, Heinz Pagels, claimed that the studies about large groups of meditators reducing crime or healing people were simply faulty science. Pagels is the author of The Cosmic Code: Quantum Physics as the Language of Nature. He writes:”The claim that the fields of modern physics have anything to do with the “field of consciousness” is false…To see the beautiful and profound ideas of modern physics, the labor of generations of scientists, so willfully perverted provokes a feeling of compassion for those who might be taken in by these distortions…”

Strong words! The idea that quantum healing could be a wide reaching health cure is attractive on many levels; it could be a relief for health issues, but it could also be a way to connect on a deeper level with other human beings. As will all holistic healing methods, however, these claims have strong detractors.
