Large Chemical Fire in Texas
A massive chemical fire ignited at the Magnablend chemical plant roughly 30 miles south of Dallas in Waxahachie, Texas, today.
Southerly winds carried smoke and flames away from nearby school Wedgeworth Elementary School. School buses were hastily packed to the brim with students attempting to leave the scene in case the fire spread. The fire released dense, thick, black smoke and several large fireballs and explosions.
Magnablend is a "custom chemical blending, manufacturing and packaging company," according to their website. Magnablend makes custom chemicals for many different industries including agriculture, water treatment, pet food and feed supplements, construction, industrial cleaning and oil fields. The website identifies the company as a "22,000 square foot flammable facility."
A fire truck responded early on the scene but was quickly engulfed in flames, according to MSNBC.com. The nearby Ellis County campus of Navarro College was evacuated.
The Texas Department of Public Safety tweeted "If ur in Waxahachie near Hwy 87/IH35E, EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY. Solon Place Apts/Wedgeworth Elem/Navarro College LEAVE NOW," a little after 12 p.m. CDT.
