“An off-campus underground explosion Tuesday morning on Westwood Boulevard between LeConte and Weyburn avenues sent a booming noise across UCLA, caused power outages and made lights flicker from Ackerman Student Union to the UCLA Wilshire Center. Nowhere were the effects more dramatic for Bruins than for those working in the Bank of America building across the street from the blast.

“We saw flames,” said Elaine Schmidt, a senior media relations officer for UCLA Health Sciences who works in the bank building.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department determined that an underground electrical transformer vault caused the explosion under the southbound lanes of Westwood Boulevard. The 9:25 a.m. blast briefly sent flames into the air and shot a manhole cover into a passing bus and across the street, witnesses said. Windows shattered on the first floor of the bank while the UCLA Extension building and others briefly lost power. The bus driver, the only person reported hurt in the incident, received minor injuries.

In UCLA offices located on the upper floors of the bank building, Bruins said they first thought it was a bomb, an earthquake or even bank robbers tunneling under the bank.”
