The quake was centred in the Indian Ocean off Java.

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has struck in the Indian Ocean south of the Indonesian island of Java, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said this morning.

Indonesian seismologists have issued a tsunami warning but the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no risk of a widespread destructive wave, only a "very small possibility of a local tsunami".

The USGS said the epicentre was 24 kilometres underground, revising an earlier estimate of 10 kilometres.

It was located 241 kilometres east-north-east of Christmas Island and 277 kilometres south of Tasikmalaya in West Java.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology says there is no tsunami threat to Australia or Australian territories.
