Angry Pakistanis burn effigies of Obama as stranded U.S. supply trucks risk attack after Afghan border is closed

Thousands of angry Pakistanis took to the streets yesterday and burned an effigy of President Barack Obama in protest over the Nato strike that killed 24 soldiers.

Demonstrators, who carried anti-Western placards and shouted slogans such as ‘death to America’, also set fire to U.S. flags.

In Karachi, the port city used by the U.S. to ship supplies to troops fighting in Afghanistan, more than 700 people gathered outside the American consulate.

They shouted: ‘Stay away Americans, Pakistan is ours, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our army.’

Outside the press club in the city, dozens of political activists burnt an effigy of President Obama wearing the same style of orange jumpsuits that Guantanamo prisoners wear.

In the central city of Multan, more than 300 activists loyal to the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, as well as local traders took to the streets, burning U.S. and Nato flags.

Among their shouted demands were ‘stop drone attacks’ - referring to the remote controlled CIA air strikes against Islamist militants.
